Ideas for how to get involved with the community this spring.
Spring in Minnesota is a beautiful time—not only does the landscape come to life, but more people are out and about, ready to enjoy warmer weather.
To celebrate a season of new beginnings, try getting involved in a community-focused effort like:
Caring for a public space
Contact the Minneapolis, St. Paul or your local parks department about volunteer opportunities to help spruce up community parks and gardens.
Gathering a group
Keep things informal and invite your neighbors to join you in:
- Picking up trash on your block, at a local playground or on a community trail
- Donating time to do post-winter yard cleanup for older people—get started with these lawn care tips and outdoor safety tips
Lend a hand as a volunteer
Maybe you’re ready to make an ongoing commitment as a volunteer, or maybe you’re looking to sign up for a single event. In either case, the YMCA has plenty of opportunities to help you get involved in volunteering.

Make the most of your spring cleaning
After cleaning out the cobwebs indoors, organize a neighborhood book drive in your yard or garage—just keep it outdoors so you’re easily visible. In addition to what you’ve determined to donate, friends and family can multiply your efforts in giving to:
- A public library—see Hennepin County info
- Books for Africa
- Read Indeed
This same idea could be used for things other than books, too—just depends on where you want to focus your efforts, and what you have to donate.
